Valkyries Winger and England International Lydia Thompson Sponsored By SW&A Accountants

As many of our clients and regular readers of our blog will be aware, we’re big supporters of Worcester Warriors here at SW&A.

Last year we sponsored Perry Humphries and this season we’re extending our sponsorship and are proud to be sponsoring Worcester Valkyries sensation, England International and one of the world’s finest young rugby players, Lydia Thompson.

Lydia, who was a double try scorer in the 2017 Rugby World Cup final against New Zealand and made the shortlist in the World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year award, returns to Sixways after a spell with the England 7s programme.

The 26-year-old winger brings a considerable amount of top level experience to the young Valkyries squad. Lydia has kindly contacted SW&A this week and said “I wanted to Thank you for sponsoring me this season, that is really kind of you and I really appreciate your support”

Some of Lydia’s recent sporting accolade and achievements include: -

  • 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup - Winner
  • 2017 Six Nations - Winner

Perry Humphreys Sponsored by SW&A Accountants

Perry Humphreys joined the Warriors Academy from Leicester Tigers in 2014 and made his first-team debut against Rotherham Titans in the Greene King IPA Championship later that year. Humphreys scored his first try for the Club against Moseley in October 2014 and went on to score a fantastic solo effort against Leinster A in the British & Irish Cup semi-final to earn Warriors a place in the showpiece event, where he came on as a replacement as his side defeated Doncaster Knights to claim the trophy.

The versatile back, who can play at full-back or winger, was also an ever-present for Worcester Cavaliers during the 2014/15 season, scoring three tries in seven appearances as the young side reached the Aviva A League final.

Humphreys continued his development in the 2015/16 season and went on to feature in the European Challenge Cup while also scoring six tries for Worcester Cavaliers. He was rewarded with a first-team contract in February 2016 and burst onto the Premiership scene at the start of the 2016/17 campaign, as he scored three tries in the opening four games of the season - including a sublime solo effort against Gloucester Rugby on his home Premiership debut - before picking up Warriors' Player of the Month award for September.

Humphreys went on to make 18 appearances during the 2016/17 campaign before being invited to train with the England squad ahead of their tour to Argentina in 2017.

The 2017/18 season saw Humphreys play 15 times for Warriors scoring six tries. Before his move to Sixways, Humphreys made one appearance for Leicester Tigers in the Anglo-Welsh Cup against Welsh region Ospreys in November 2013.

Watching Worcester Warriors in the 2014/15 Season... our MD's thoughts..

Well where to start... I guess that September 2014 game away at Bristol... our 1 of only 2 losses in the entire season - no word of a lie - I was worried, very worried indeed... our first real Championship game against a side (Bristol) who on many occasions have been strong contenders for a Premiership spot.. a formidable squad.. and we lost..

It didn't take warriors long to bounce back with a string of incredible wins and a streak that was only rivaled by our loosing streak in the Premiership in the former season..

Game after game, team after team; battered into submission and defeat by a confident, strong and focused Warriors team hungry for a swift and speedy return to the Premiership.... A seemingly unstoppable team securing win after win with lots of new faces and stars being born from a relatively young squad..

A real pleasure to watch, support and enjoy a season of great rugby and of course a successive run of wins not enjoyed by Warriors fans for a number of seasons. The season was hotting up with Worcester and Bristol jostling for that top spot of the Championship table..

Worcester was winning games, bonus points win scoring higher and higher to a final score of 97 - not enough to beat Bristol to the top spot who had an equally great season notching up and equally impressive 103.. Worcester secured 21 bonus points and Bristol 19 which is an amazing score for both teams.

Bristol secured the top spot as both teams blasted through the Semi-Final games to come down to a two-legged final Bristol V Warriors - the clear Titans of the Championship to battle it out for promotion to the Aviva Premiership...

....and the final is here.... it all comes down to this..

And what a great final it was - Bristol opted to play the first leg at home and the second away; hoping to secure a home crowd win going into the final match at Sixways.... it simply wasn't to be.. both teamed put out an impressive display of skill and quality rugby but it was Worcester who edged ahead by a single point. As it turns out that single point was so important to the final result - no one could have predicted..

I will admit; up to and including the 26th May 2015, I was prepared to watch the Warriors spend another year in the Championship. I was happy to see continued growth and development before returning to the Premiership - on the 27th May 2015 this all changed - nothing short of a win was good enough!!

Sixways; 27th May 2015 7:45 pm Kick Off - and the battle was on... a great first half - Warriors were in this game - no one was coming back from a 16-6 lead at half time - in fact no team has come from behind to win a Championship Final.. ever.. it was in the bag..

Second half - wow! Bristol came out fighting and brought us to a position of 30-16 lead - it was all over.. we were done... but the Warriors, the team, the Titans were ready for a fight to the death.. and that's what they brought..

Less than 10 minutes on the clock and a shell-shocked Bristol was seemingly dumbfounded as Warriors secured a penalty try, conversion and a great try from Chris Pennell as the clock was ticking away.. would it really come down to this.. a whole season's work teetering on the boot of Ryan Lamb..

It did - I was there; I could not breathe, think, focus - I was numb. The kick, the score the result the whistle blown we had done it; a draw against Bristol, against all the odds the critics and the cynics, on aggregate Worcester had won the Championship in one of the most spectacular finals ever seen...

What a game, what a result, what a team -
